Camp Thunderbird (Vancouver Island Y) - Leadership Development Counsellor (AOG)

Join YMCA-YWCA Camp Thunderbird, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, in Sooke, BC and help shape tomorrow’s leaders through outdoor adventure and wilderness immersion! We offer both overnight and day camp programs. With 1200 acres of wilderness and a commitment to excellence, our camp provides children and youth with skills, confidence, and appreciation for the natural environment.

What you will be doing:
• Counsellors work in pairs and are responsible for meeting the emotional, physical and safety needs of a group of up to 10 youth, age 13-15, for programs up to 19 days in length.
• Our kayak groups are accompanied by a Level 2 Guide, and assisted by one or two AOGs for every expedition. There are 7 or 8 youth participants with at least one Level 2 guide and one AOG. Most often, there is a third leader, who may or may not be an AOG. We travel with singles and doubles.
• Plan, prepare and lead a 5- or 9-day expedition.
• Share and enjoy in the fun of camp, guiding teens to develop their leadership skills in activities such as: canoeing, kayaking, SUP, rock climbing, group games, archery, hiking, and swimming.

What you’ll need before work starts:
• a clear police information check, with Vulnerable Sector Screening
• proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (two doses)
• SKGABC Assistant Overnight Guide Certification
• Wilderness First Aid and CPR C Certification
