    Position Assistant Sea Kayak Guide

The job will require participants to work in a demanding physical environment; applicants will be required to be in good physical shape, be prepared to be in the outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions, work in a team environment and be adaptable to change. Duties of the successful applicant will include leading week long kayak trips. Weeks alternate between camping and lodge based trips. Interacting with people from different walks of life, risk management and decision making duties are also an important part of this position. Successful applicants will be required to care for, share knowledge with participants and be an ambassador for The Outdoor Center and The University of Calgary. Position requirements: The position requires an individual with the hard skills, certifications and experience to guide safe multi-day sea kayaking trips. Candidates require the soft skills necessary to provide customers with a great learning experience and an enjoyable time on the water. Candidates are required to have an up to date 40 hour wilderness first aid certification, SKGABA Level 2, valid department of communications certification to operate a marine VHF radio. Qualifications of all guides at the Outdoor Centre are based on minimum standards and we expect our guides to be on par with the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of British Columbia or Canadian Association of Sea Kayak Guides. Assets include experience teaching and guiding in multiple environments and locations, a strong work ethic, being a problem solver and a thorough knowledge of equipment repairs. Having a post-secondary education in a related field will be seen as an asset.
