West Coast Outdoor Adventure Ltd is a small but busy kayak, paddleboard, and bicycle rental company and a retail shop for the kayaks and paddleboards in the stunning location of Sooke – just outside Victoria, BC. We are located on a private dock within the Sooke Harbour Resort & Marina where we have been based since 2009. For the first time we are taking on an assistant manager, which may run beyond the normal “season” as we expand more into the surf market for the winter months (TBC) This is a “hands on” position, meaning that you will be a full and active participant of the day to day running of the business – as well as carrying out the everyday tasks as required. In a “normal” (pre-covid) year there is normally 2-3 other staff members (as well as the manager/owner) on each day. Due to the uncertainty of the 2020 season we put the brakes on hiring – and despite the lack of international visitors, we were just marginally down in business, although it is still a little uncertain for what 2021 will bring, indications are we will still have a busy summer – last year Vancouver was our biggest market, as opposed to USA and UK/Europe in a normal year! So we are looking for fun, enthusiastic, fit and outgoing personalities to round out our team for this summer. Our ideal candidate will: Have a minimum 2 years experience in the tourism industry – and be considering a career in the industry. Enjoy working as a team yet more than capable to handle tasks alone. Be outgoing, highly motivated, punctual, friendly, approachable and hardworking.. Be passionate about showcasing the Sooke area and landscape to tourists/locals alike. Maintain an understanding of safety regulation importance Be prepared to work through weekends and holidays during the summer period (we try to give you at least 1 weekend day off!) Be flexible and adaptive to put the customer first. Be great under pressure. Will love ensuring the customer has the absolute best time possible. Will be positive and energetic – even when it's hot and you're tired. Will live or have accommodation options in the area (can be challenging if not at least semi-local) Responsibilities and Duties Look after the shop/operations at times. Preparing clients with waivers and payment Explain the area, conditions and expected weather. Demonstrate use of equipment Checking all equipment before departure and upon return Entering sales receipts. Taking inquiries and showing both the Hobie Kayaks and accessories and the Paddleboard products we sell. General Duties as required (some of these duties are quite specific and training will be given) Qualifications and skills: Min 2 years/seasons in the tourism industry Be fit – some lifting of equipment is required First Aid Certification Level 1 Kayak Guide (or similar, or be prepared to obtain) Knowledge of the Sooke area – Langford to Port Renfrew Basic bicycle maintenance experience Outdoors / fitness orientated Benefits Working in the Sooke outdoors and experiencing its epic location every day Participating in a fun and enthusiastic work environment Perks of free kayaking/biking and paddleboarding Please tell us a little about yourself in a cover letter and include your resume.
