Job Description:

As our base camp assistant guide you're responsible for helping with all camp and on-the-water operations for our multi-day Orca Camp kayak tours based out of Port McNeill, BC. If you have your SKGABC Overnight Assist certification or higher, and are looking for a full summer (July – September) of valuable experience in the guiding industry under an experienced and knowledgeable lead guide and supportive office team, we may have just the spot for you! You’ll learn why our slice of BC is the best place to see Orcas in the wild, develop your campfire cooking skills in true West Coast style, work with international clients from all over the world, and paddle daily in the world- renowned Johnstone Straight.

Your daily duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Spend the best part of your summer kayaking and camping at our private base camp along the rugged coast of northeast Vancouver Island
  • Provide in-camp and on-the-water support to our lead guides and international guests
  • Play host to visitors from around the world and Canada who have come to experience the wonders of kayaking in the realm of Killer Whales
  • Help manage the day-to-day operations of camp life - clean-up duties, changing linens, washing dishes, provisioning supplies, aiding in pre-trip briefings, and more
  • Put your cooking skills to the test preparing meals and snacks for our guests
  • Act as camp photographer (if you’d like) and liaison with Ecosummer's sales and logistics office
  • Assist in setting-up base camp at the beginning of the season and dismantling it at the end

    We're looking for committed, hard working assistant guides with excellent people skills that are willing to work long hours and weekends throughout the summer months, typically 6 days a week with 1 rest day in between.

    Successful candidates will possess the following skills:
  • A minimum of SKGABC Overnight Assistant Guide Certification or equivalent
  • A valid 40 HR Wilderness First Aid training or higher
  • excellent leadership skills with the ability to communicate well with international guests as well as staff
  • teach basic kayaking skills to each group of new arrivals
  • safely lead groups through the Johnstone Strait providing interpretive narration on flora, fauna and marine life
  • be in good physical shape to allow for some manual labour and extensive paddling
  • In the event of an emergency guide must assist with rescuing clients, providing first aid and organizing individual and group evacuation
