Keynote Speaker: Pam Murray BSc., BEd.

Interpreting Interpretation

Interpretation is a ‘soft skill’ often required of kayak guides, but what is it exactly and what do best practices look like?  Explore the definition of interpretation, discover some of the current thought on best practices, and gain practical ideas for engaging and inspiring your guests with the stories of the places you paddle through.

Pam is the Past Chair of Interpretation Canada and has worked as a front-line interpreter since 1997 for Parks Canada, Metro Vancouver Parks, and Arenaria Research and Interpretation in BC Parks. She is the Lead Interpretative Guide at Vancouver Island University. And she currently manages, coordinates, and delivers school programs at Milner Gardens & Woodland, which is located in the unceded territory of the Qualicum First Nation, and does contract work for the Ecoforestry Institute Society in the homeland of the Snuneymuxw and Stz'minus First Nations. She is a certified teacher, enjoyed a brief stint working for a kayak rental company, and commutes by kayak from Protection Island to Nanaimo.

Pam's involvement with Interpretation Canada began at a regional spring workshop in 2003, when she realized that interpreters were her people. Since then, she has served in various leadership roles for IC, including as Chair from 2016 - 2021 and co-editing the Interpreter’s Big Book of Disasters. Pam believes that the work done as interpreters is essential, difficult, and undervalued and is committed to advocating for the profession.

The AGM is always a productive and meaningful space.
