The 2010 Spring Guides exchange returns to Salt Spring Island! As always, this event will host a wide range of events, bringing together guides from across the coast. With hard skill workshops, knowledge sessions, and a dance on Saturday night, expect to test your paddling skills and socialize with a broad range of people.
Win a Werner Performance Core Paddle!!! Along with other prizes, One lucky member will return home with a brand new Kalliste 230 paddle.
We are pleased to have both Seaward Kayaks and Delta Kayaks coming with boats for our members to demo.
Pre-registration, while not essential, is nice so we can plan for approximate numbers. Contact Island Escapades at email escapades@saltspring.com
CPR Recertification - Friday and Sunday! Contact escapades@saltspring.com - Island Escapades to register. Limited spots available.($25 + GST per person)
The spring exchange will cost $75, and help cover several meals, hall rentals, and logistics. BYOB (Bring your own boat). Kayak rental/borrow will be available from Island Escapdes (contact escapades@saltspring.com to book a boat).
Accommodation:
Salt Spring Island has many different accommodation options, check out saltspringisland.org , or, like most of us, come prepared to camp.
Garden Faire Campground: convieniently located near town, the SKGABC has reserved a number of spots for members. Members will register / pay for sites at the exchange registration desk! Bring your own chair. See you there!

- 4:30-6:00 - Guides Olympics event #1 (Prizes for 1-3rd place - Paddles, Life Jackets, and Towing Gear!)
- 5:45-6:30 - Transport canada New Mall craft Regulations
- 6:30-7:30 - Seaward Kayaks talk on Boat Designs and New Thermoforme technologies
- 7:30ish - Dinner at Lions Hall
- 8:00-9:15 Slideshow - "From Saltspring to Skagway" - Jack Rosen
- 9:30-11:30 Campfire on Island Escapades Beach (bring your instruments)
Saturday
- 8:00 Breakfast at Lions Hall
Two Sessions start!
- Session A
- 7am - Breakfast
- 8am - 5:30 pm
- Start for group to Prolier Pass - 8knot flood at 1600
- Leadership and Group control in swift waters
- Immersion and full safety gear required
- Pick up lunch at Pomodoros prior to start
- Lead by Trevor Chapman & Rick Snowden
- Session B
- 10am - 4:30 pm
- Moving in currents, ferrying, high and low brace turns, towing and leadership in Moving waters
- Pick up lunch at Pomodoros prior to start
- Lead by Jack Rosen & Kris Wilhelmsen
- 9:00 Breakfast at Lions Hall
- 10-12:45 - Intro and Advanced Strokes
- Navigation Game in Ganges Harbour
- Lunch at Pomodoros - pick up your sliced pizza & cookie and pop
- 1:30-4:30 A) Self and assisted Rescues (wetsuits / drysuits mandatory)
- 1:30-4:30 B) Intertidal Interpretation by Biologist David Denning (David Denning is a leading invertebrate biologist that is renown in BC. He is an ex-Ecosummer kayak guide and a strong force in the Salt Spring Conservancy)
- 6:00-7:00 Mark Hall from Delta Kayaks - How to fix Thermoform boats in the field and in your fleet. Location: On the beach at Island Escapades
- Dinner - Do it yourself - Cook at the hall, or eat out. We highly recommend the Tree House cafe! Special Dinner available for just under $10.00.
- 9-12:30 - LIVE MUSIC - "Synergy" & "The Oogies" - Let's Dance the night away!
Sunday
- 9:00 - Pancake Breakfast for all! Lions Hall
- Guides Olympics Finals after breakfast
- 9:30-12:30 CPR Recertification session (Pre-Regsiter)
- 11-12 - Coast Guard - "Making Calls & Kayaking Safety"
- 12-12:30 - Wrap-up
